Test Town Walthamstow

LSx delivered Carnegie UK Trust's TestTown 2015 in Walthamstow.

The challenge

Business development can be a challenging task but a great opportunity. We inspired, enthused and engaged young people in Walthamstow to develop their own social enterprises.

LSx won a place to take part in TestTown 2015, the UK and Ireland’s biggest accelerator programme for entrepreneurs (16-30). The programme brings groups of entrepreneurs together to learn skills and test out their innovations across the British Isles. Participants who took part in the Walthamstow project had the opportunity to gain a place at the TestTown grand final, competing with other projects across the UK and a chance to win £10,000 to develop their business.

The TestTown project aimed to increase aspirations, work-readiness, and community cohesion in Waltham Forest by training and developing teams of ‘green entrepreneurs’ to develop waste enterprises. It helped foster the excitement of an entrepreneurial culture in Waltham Forest.

This was the third year that TestTown has taken place and the first time in Walthamstow. Locations that have previously hosted a TestTown event have seen their footfall double. You can find out more about TestTown through their website,

How did we do it?

1)    Business planning event - We hosted an event for entrepreneurial young people in Walthamstow on 2nd October 2015 with existing entrepreneurs, local mentors, and social enterprise start-up specialist Tree Shepherd to help young people develop green enterprises that respond to local issues such as fly-tipping or spearhead new ideas such as upcycling fashion. By the end of the event young people developed business action plans and were clear about what they wanted to achieve.

2)    Ongoing mentoring - LSx provided links to local mentors and opportunities for participants to test their idea in the market.

3)    Dragon’s Den – We ran a mock dragon’s den where young people presented their progress and pitch their business idea to panel competing for a place in the TestTown grand final.

4)    Grand final – One young person or group was selected to go to the TestTown Grand final and be in with their chance to win £10,000 to develop their business idea.
