London 2012

London’s successful bid to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games was backed by a strong commitment to maximising the long-term legacy benefits. Not just in terms of jobs and skills, but a whole range of social and environmental improvements for Londoners.

The challenge became turning the vision into a reality. Olympic delivery bodies LOCOG and ODA were not able to do it alone. Harnessing tools and techniques already tested in the UK and abroad – from civic engagement techniques to tri-generation – helped. It also required specification of clear and consistent performance targets in contracts issued by LDA and ODA.

We worked to support these aims by:

  • Engaging businesses and NGOs to harness their expertise and enthusiasm for a sustainable Games.
  • Supporting the delivery of all phases of the Games including planning, design, construction and legacy.
  • LSx is a delivery partner for Transform, a key initiative within LOCOG's Changing Places programme.

Supporting the delivery

LSx participated in a number of initiatives to help make 2012 the most sustainable Games ever. They included:

Stratford City Development Environmental Challenge Group
The group developed a zonal plan and an environmental sustainability manual for the developers, Westfield.

London 2012 Forum
The forum acted as a channel for sharing ideas and increasing participation. It was set up to inform, engage and enthuse Londoners.

The London Assembly Environment Committee Inquiries
We participated as a stakeholder in inquiries carried out by this committee to assess commitments and progress on the environmental aspects of the Games.

Giving feedback to Olympic Bodies on strategies and plans
We are always eager to use our knowledge and our network to assist in the consultation of strategies such as the ODA Draft Procurement Policy and the ODA Draft Sustainability Principles.

The Transform project helped Londoners revamp green spaces, reduce their waste and get connected to their communities.

A key partnership initiative within LOCOG’s Changing Places programme, Transform used the Olympics as a hook to encourage sustainability in Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest and Greenwich. London Sustainability Exchange has joined forces with Groundwork London to help communicate environmental messages and monitor and evaluate behaviour change within the project.

The project began in December 2010 and ended December 2013 during which time:
