Environmental Equalities: A toolkit for change

Date: Friday 28th November 08
Time: 9:00am – 12:00pm
Venue: Founder’s Room, Contemporary Urban Centre, SE1 0NQ

Aim of the event:
The aim of the series of free half-day events is to enable participants/delegates to pool professional knowledge, experience and skills in order to better foster pro-environmental behaviour across the capital’s communities. ‘Environmental Equalities: A toolkit for change’ sought to introduce LSx’s new interactive toolkit, which has been carefully designed to ensure holistic thinking around issues of environmental equality and resource use during the planning of projects.

In a broader sense, the event aimed to assist delegates in the shaping of policies and projects into an environmental-justice-friendly format, in achieving the ‘inequality-quality’ transition and in the sharing of information on best practice in relation to place-shaping and community quality of life agendas.

Presentation from speakers:
Becky Wisbey, London Borough of Barking & Dagenham, Neighbourhood Manager

Using the community engagement project in Mark’s Gate as a case study, Becky talked about community development, in particular how to build capacity within communities to address environmental injustice and inequalities at the local level.

Iara Iudicissa from Capacity Global was invited to speak about environmental justice and inequalities at the regional (London) level and encourage partnership working and collaboration. Unfortunately, however, Iara was not able to speak on the day. Here are Iara's slides...

Workshops session:
In the second part of the event, delegates formed two smaller groups to focus on workshops under the following themes:

‘How to use the Environmental Justice Toolkit’ – Kirsty explained to delegates how to use the Environmental Justice Toolkit that was given to all in a form of USB memory stick. Delegates were given the chance to trial use the tool and raise any queries they have.

‘Sharing case studies on Environmental Justice and Inequalities’ – Delegates were given the opportunity to share their experiences and case studies on tackling Environmental Justice and Inequalities’ issues.
