Wandsworth Breathes

Wandsworth Breathes

The challenge

Enhance the environmental quality and biodiversity in UK through the conservation and improvement of public parks and amenities together with the social environment, particularly educating the new generation in environmental protection and sustainable development.

Our programme aims to excite, enthuse and actively engage residents in Wandsworth in transforming under-utilised green spaces and helping local wildlife flourish. We will work closely with a highly successful Battersea youth centre as well as a successful Garden Centre, to ensure that we effectively engage the whole community.

  • Providence House – purpose-built youth and community centre near Clapham Junction station, Falcon Road, Battersea
  • Battersea Flower Station – garden centre and florist offering a great selection of plants and locally produced crafts. Located on Battersea Park Road.

Securing the involvement of residents of all ages in enjoying and conserving their local green environment is key to the development and future preservation of the green spaces and in bringing the community together. As part of the project we will also The ambition is to enter next year’s ‘Wandsworth in bloom’ garden and floral display competition.

 How is it being delivered?

We have designed this project so that our partners we are working with are in control and actively involve people in making decisions about the activities as follows:

  • identify the possible enhancements/improvements required;
  • develop ideas and plans for them;
  • implement the desired changes;
  • play a part in their ongoing use and management.

Participants who are trained as champions will be co-producing the activities as volunteers.

We will ensure that the volunteers of the organisations we are supporting, including but not limited to the “champions”, have access to specific resources and guidance. Champions will play a key role in engaging their peers (to maximize participation) and as a result of taking part in our training they will gain increased confidence and skills to influence and engage their peers.

  • At least one under-utilised site improved to become a valued and well used space and plans in place to further enhance and continue involvement of young people
  • Participating groups develop robust plans to manage and enhance the sites in the future
  • Young people increase in their understanding, confidence and skills in improving and maintaining green spaces and encouraging biodiversity
  • Increased well-being of young people through increased contact with the natural environment
